Ameland: a slower, wilder island holiday your family will love

White beaches, open dunes, and a pace of life that actually lets you breathe.

— San & Jo

Ameland is one of those rare places where your kids can run free, the air smells like sea salt, and nobody is in a rush. Part of the Frisian Wadden Islands in the Netherlands, this small island packs in beaches, dunes, forests, salt marshes, and wildlife into a car-light, bike-friendly escape that feels genuinely different from a city break.

Your family can spend the days cycling through dune landscapes, spotting seals along the coast, climbing a lighthouse, or simply digging in the sand on one of the widest beaches in the country. The four villages — Nes, Hollum, Ballum, and Buren — each have their own quiet charm, with historic buildings, local museums, and plenty of spots to grab a Dutch pancake.

Ameland is sometimes called the diamond of the Dutch Wadden, and once you arrive, you will understand why. It is the kind of place that slows everything down in the best possible way, and where most families end up wishing they had booked an extra night or two.

Best things to do

Why we love Ameland for families

Climb the Vuurtoren Ameland lighthouse

The iconic 58-metre lighthouse in Hollum has 240 steps leading to sweeping views over the dunes and coastline. Inside, exhibits tell the stories of the lighthouse keepers who lived and worked here. It is a proper adventure for curious kids and a genuinely impressive view at the top.

1-2 hours

Spot seals on a seal safari

Seals are commonly found along Ameland's coastline, and seal safaris give your family a chance to see them up close in their natural habitat. It is one of those wildlife moments that kids genuinely talk about long after the holiday is over. The Nature Center on the island also has educational exhibits about local seals and island flora.

2-3 hours

Cycle through the dunes and nature paths

Cycling is the best way to explore Ameland, full stop. Dedicated paths wind through dune landscapes, forests, and nature areas like Ballumerblinkert, making it easy and safe for the whole family. The island is flat enough for younger riders and long enough to keep older kids interested.

Half day to full day

Explore National Park Het Oerd

This expanding dune landscape is home to over 60 bird species and a rich mix of flora and fauna. There is even a 24-metre sand dune your kids can climb for a brilliant view across the park. It is a proper nature adventure without needing any specialist gear.

2-4 hours

Spend a day on the beach

Ameland's wide white sandy beaches are some of the best in the Netherlands. Whether your family wants to build sandcastles, try sport fishing, join a beach volleyball session, or simply sit and watch the waves, there is space for everyone. The beaches are clean, safe, and rarely overcrowded outside peak summer weeks.

Walk the mudflats on a wadlopen tour

Guided mudflat walks across the Wadden Sea are one of the most memorable things you can do on Ameland. You wade through the tidal flats between islands, guided by an expert who knows the tides and terrain. It is messy, exciting, and genuinely unlike anything else. Check age and fitness requirements before booking.

Wear old shoes you do not mind getting completely ruined
3-5 hours

Visit the island museums

Ameland has a surprisingly rich museum scene for a small island. The Sorgdrager Cultural History Museum covers whaling and island life, the Maritiem Centrum Abraham Fock features horse rescue boat demonstrations, and the Bunker Museum explores WWII history. Together they give kids a real sense of what life on this island has looked like across the centuries.

Our verdict

How Ameland scores for families

Kids

A car-light island with beaches, wildlife, cycling paths, and hands-on museums. Kids have genuine freedom here and plenty to keep them engaged.

Culture

Three solid museums, historic village architecture, and a rich whaling and seafaring heritage give Ameland more cultural depth than you might expect.

Food

Simple, honest Dutch food done well. Fresh fish, pancakes, and poffertjes are everywhere. Not a foodie destination, but families eat well.

Nature

This is where Ameland truly shines. A national park, salt marshes, dune forests, 60-plus bird species, and seals on your doorstep. Nature lovers will be in their element.

Budget

Island prices are a little higher than the mainland, especially in peak summer. That said, cycling and beach days are free, and you do not need to spend much to have a great time.

Fun facts

Things about Ameland your kids will remember

240 steps to the top

The Vuurtoren Ameland lighthouse stands 58 metres tall and has exactly 240 steps to climb. That is taller than the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and the view from the top is absolutely worth the burning legs.

A bird paradise in the dunes

National Park Het Oerd is home to over 60 different bird species. Some of them migrate thousands of kilometres to rest here on the Wadden mudflats, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important wetlands on Earth.

Horses that saved lives at sea

Before modern rescue boats existed, horses were used on Ameland to drag rescue vessels through the surf to save sailors in distress. The Maritiem Centrum Abraham Fock still demonstrates this remarkable tradition, and it is one of the most unique things you will see anywhere in the Netherlands.

Taste Ameland

What to eat with your family on Ameland

Kibbeling

must try

Local fish stalls in Nes harbour

Deep-fried chunks of white fish served with a creamy tartar sauce. This is the ultimate Dutch seaside snack and you will find it at fish stalls across the island. Crispy, simple, and absolutely delicious straight from the paper bag.

Haring (raw herring)

local favourite

Fish vendors around Nes village

Fresh raw herring served with chopped onions is a classic Dutch street food and widely available on Ameland. It is not for every kid, but adventurous eaters will love trying it the traditional way, held by the tail and lowered into your mouth.

Poffertjes

kids love it

Market stalls and pancake houses in Nes

Tiny, fluffy Dutch pancakes dusted with powdered sugar and a knob of butter. You will find these at markets and food stands around the island, and they are an instant hit with kids of every age. Warm, sweet, and completely irresistible.

Stamppot

safe choice

Restaurant De Nesseborg, Nes

On cooler evenings, stamppot is exactly what you want. Mashed potatoes combined with kale or carrots and topped with a smoky sausage. It is hearty, warming Dutch comfort food at its best, and most restaurants on the island serve a good version.

Pannekoeken

daily treat

Pannenkoekenrestaurant De Vluchthaven, Hollum

Dutch pancakes are bigger and thinner than the poffertjes variety, and they come with a huge range of toppings from bacon and cheese to apple and syrup. A pancake lunch is practically a family tradition on Ameland, and kids absolutely love building their own combination.
